Giraffe

It's Not the House, It's Me

I guess you can say I am pretentious when it comes to film. Well, I am pretentious about music as well, but that's another story. I don't watch a film just because it's on and I don't watch films that are #1 at the box office such as those by Michael Bay or Saw I-6. I'm not into crazy special effects or super hero films either.

I haven't watched any of the Transformers or Spiderman films and I don't really want to. Well, I did watch the Dark Knight but I'm pretty sure it was because Heath Ledger is in it and I think he was a good actor. Btw, I thought the film was horrid.

I will never watch a chick flick either. Films with such titles as The Devil Wears Prada and Sleepless in Seattle, actually any film with Meg Ryan is a turn off. You're probably thinking that I am a hater and in many ways I'm not, but when it comes to film I'm certainly one.

Honestly, I don't like to spend precious time watching a film that is a complete waste of time to me. I'd rather draw a picture or flip through old issues of Harper's Bazaar.

I'm not a fan of "scary" films either, snooze. Sincerely, there are just a few things that scare me and monsters is not one of them. There are two films though that have definitely given me the chills and they are The Others and The Blair Witch Project.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Others because of the way it looks and because it's a time piece. I'm a sucker for anything old looking so for that fact alone I was intrigued to watch it. The fact that the children saw ghosts, but their mother (Nicole Kidman) did not was also spooky because there is that saying that kids never lie! The large mansion where they lived also had an eerie and dark element to it and if I was a child I would feel uneasy about living there for sure. The thick fog that accumulated outside of their property is also a bit bloodcurdling!

The Blair Witch Project was also a bit unsettling because of the way it looks. This has to do with the fact that it was shot to appear like a documentary and also because it looked very minimal it was definitely scary. From the beginning when the lettering appears saying that the footage you're about to watch was found, but the people who shot it was not, you start to feel a bit confused and unnerving. I remember thinking about all the news stories I'd heard over the years of hikers and campers gone missing and never found. I related that to what I was watching and it became very scary. Because it looked so real you believe that it is for an hour or two, however long the film was and you really start feeling for the actors and all the frightening and mysterious things that are suddenly happening to them. So when I heard about the film Paranormal Activity I knew I wanted to watch it because of the way it looked.

Luckily I was not disappointed. Paranormal Activity was very creepy and I don't even believe in ghosts! The film is basically about a man who purchases a camera because he wants to record all the happenings that his girlfriend claims that she has been experiencing ever since she was eight years old. Throughout the film he follows her all over their house with the camera and even sets it up in their bedroom and when 2:30 am or so hits strange and spine-chilling things start happening. The fun really starts to unravel when the idiot boyfriend buys a Ouija Board.

The film can drag a bit, but I kinda liked that because it made it a lot more real. It would have been too forced if they only showed the juicy parts! As you watch it you also start to feel sorry for the girl because the "demons" won't leave her alone and her boyfriend is a total jerk for instigating them.

I'll stop now because I don't want to give it all away, but all I can say is that I was spooked while watching this! Oh and in case you are wondering, the films that I do care to watch anytime are film noir and foreign films such as those made in Mexico and Korea, Tartan films wutttttt!

Got Them Records

My weekend was dope, I did some record shopping. There's a spot in my town that has super sales a few times a year and all the records are $1, yippee!

I did pretty good as you can see and I even got Lost In Translation for $2! My favorite acquisition was Magical Mystery Tour for sure. I was worried it wouldn't play, but it runs perfectly well in my record player.

I don't do this enough, but here it is, today's outfit...

I can't get enough of my denim shorts, I think it's because I don't have too many short skirts. I'm wearing a black top with sequins at the top and bell sleeves and a short sleeved cardigan with tassels that I got for $3 at the thrift store. I was inspired to wear my leopard tights ever since I saw a woman at Starbucks the other day wearing some, sometimes I forget I have certain things in my wardrobe. The boots I'm wearing also seem to be attached to my feet, I've been wearing those suckers on a regular basis and the bag I'm sporting is the black fringe one I bought when I got my Chanel shoes.

Maybe tomorrow I won't forget to take an outfit photo!

What I Want Now

When one thinks about California sunshine and palm trees come to mind. Both exist in this beautiful state, but when the fall starts to roll the icy Arctic winds hit the Bay with fierce. The weather has been kinda bipolar, sunny and hot during the day and windy and chilly during the evening. I find myself changing twice a day to adjust to this nonsense weather and boots and comfy stylish coats are usually what I consider when dressing up for the night.

I came to the conclusion that I won't be able to afford the $200 pair of Jeffrey Campbell boots I've been lusting over for the past month, but these by Forever 21 are equally as cool and totally inexpensive...

I've also been craving a leopard print faux fur jacket. This one by Express has a fair price tag and it looks so warm and fierce I must have it...

Curling up with a book and pilling on the blankets is also extremely appealing right about now. I've seriously been thinking about exploring historic preservation, so I placed an order last night for these two books that offer an introduction to the subject.

I probably won't become a couch potato or anything like that because I can't stay at home for long periods of time without loosing my head, but fall and winter are definitely the seasons to relax.

Pretty Halloween

My Little Pony, the cutest, sweetest toy aside from the tiny Polly Pockets that have probably been discontinued because little children have swallowed too many of them. I love these little magical horse figures, their colorful bodies, cool body art, giant glittery eyes, and long hair! I loved brushing their manes and styling it into different hairdos such as braids and pony tails. The coolest ones have the rainbow hair and wings in my opinion.

So what to dress up as this Halloween? In the past I've been a Christmas tree (won an award for that at my middle school), a palm tree (monkeys and coconuts hanging from the branches included), Morticia, the devil, a ratty haired witch, Lucille Ball, Betsey Johnson and even the most loved character of cholas: Tweety Bird. I have two ideas that I dare not post on this blog because they are just too original and maybe next year I will execute them, but this year I've decided to be My Little Pony for Halloween.

The idea came to me last week at the Folsom Street Fair (leather fetish, gay, outdoor party in SF) where I saw a young man dressed up as a unicorn. I really want to wear glittery wings and unicorns don't have wings, so My Little Pony is the better choice. I've purchased a pink and lavender boa that I will use as a tail, a pair of children's small pink sparkly wings, a purple long wig and all I need is a cute little dress and tights in a pretty shade of pink to complete this ensemble. I've got plenty of bright glittery makeup so I'm good with that and all I need to do is construct a pair of pony ears. This Halloween is going to kick ass and I don't even know what I'm doing to celebrate!

Film Noir Always Makes a Comeback

I've been resisting from checking out the Spring Ready to Wear Collections because we're just getting into fall and I don't want to start thinking about the future season, but honestly it's really hard especially when there are stories in the paper about the collections on an every day basis. Yesterday I watched the Christian Dior Spring 2010 collection and I became highly enamored with it not only because John Galliano makes beautiful clothing, but because his inspiration was one of my favorite things ever: FILM NOIR. The show was a total production with fog, crazy sounds, shadows, mystery and bombshell ladies that could have been taken straight out of a Hitchcock or Wilde film.

There was a lot of lace, sheerness, and silk in this collection. Very reminiscent of what the beautiful film noir actresses wore in all my favorite films.

John Galliano as Humphrey Bogart...

I also did a little bit of shopping over the weekend. I swear, this is the last purchase I will make because I am trying to save up for the future. I could not resist these Chanel shoes, I especially fell in love with the heel! I doubt they are original since I only paid $20 for them, but frankly I don't give a rat's ass because they look damn fine on my pretty feet.

I've been looking for a cute bag with fringes and most of the ones that I've seen are made out of cheap looking suede material and are gigantic. This vintage one is just the perfect size, texture and the gold braid detail is a bonus. I'll get a lot of wear out of this one I am sure.

Check out my new nail design, I did it myself. The purple nail polish is OPI and I wish I knew what it's called because it's my favorite and I always take some from my friend Savvy when I visit her at home.

Before I forget, the Balmain S 2010 RTW is also a dream! In a nutshell the looks are totally: rock and roll, packed with sparkles, shredding and lots of body hugging action that I can totally picture Kate Moss wearing. I gotta write about that one soon.

Picnic With Your Man

I like to keep it classy with a bottle of Champagne. Dolores Park in San Francisco is usually the location for this romantic getaway. I recommend dressing up comfortably and this loose fitting dress and boots are just what I would wear to sit on the grass and chat with my significant other about life and love.

I Love You Lady

Ode to this lady, she looks mighty good. I'm digging what she is wearing, absolutely totally eclectic! Her use of color, texture (especially the bird on her head!), her divine hair color which I tried to obtain about a year ago and miserably failed, AND that awesome BLUE LIPSTICK! I wanna rock it....and I will. Who makes blue lipstick though?

Worst Fashion Show Ever at the VMA's

First, I'll start with the wackness and save the very best for last. There was more awful than good in my opinion, but then again the VMA's are always a hot tacky mess.

I don't even know who made her dress and I don't really care to find out. J-Lo looked like a jelly fish exploded all over her arms. She usually dresses pretty well, but I guess she was feeling the sea when she choose this look.

Now, I'm sure this dress by Jean Paul Gaultier is awesome by itself, but Lady Gaga had to go fuck it up by wearing a bird on her neck and a mask that covered half her face. She reminded me of Phantom of the Opera, the gothic version!

When I think of Dolce & Gabbana I think of sex, but for some reason Alicia Key's dress did not moan! I think this look would suit a 50-60 year old lady who is trying to spice up this classic silhouette. The giant green cocktail ring she's wearing looks pretty dope though.

I guess having a late night show takes a toll on one's look. The funny part is that late night tv is actually shot during the day, so Jimmy Fallon has no excuse to look like he just rolled out of bed! C'mon Jimmy, you're at an Awards show, put on a nice suit or at least wear something that's not straight out of the Gap Fall 2009 collection, jesus!

I think Prince already did this Diddy, their names are Nandy and Maya Mclean. He looked pretty pimp though, arriving with two lovely sistas, but his suit was not. I am not digging the white pipping, especially on the pants. Btw, I think the Hives rocked that look back in 1999.

Another attempt at being the center of attention. Kanye gets the award for the coolest accessory and I don't mean Amber Rose. She could have looked alright in that cat suit, if only she hadn't overdone it by wearing that giant neckpiece and earrings. But seriously Kanye, your shirt looks like it was made out of a black garbage bag and are those Timberland's? Weren't those hot back in 1997?

The best dressed list is very short. There weren't many people thinking right I guess...

I am so GLAD Beyonce did not CHOOSE to wear something out of the House of Dereon. I think it would be wise if she fired Mama Knowles because her shit is just plain fuggly. Roberto Cavalli looks so much better on her, I simply adore this red dress because it looks simple, polished and youthful.

And the BEST DRESSED at the 2009 VMA's was....

Kid Sister! I dig her glittery black pants and her shirt is the bomb! RIP Aaliyah.

Electric Lady's Day at the Park Outfit

I don't do enough outfit posts, so this will be an attempt to do it on a more frequent basis. This is the outfit I wore the other day on my outing to Dolores Park. I sported my beloved White House Black Market faux fur jacket, which has 3/4 sleeves. I bought it for $40 and it's probably my favorite coat I own. I'm also wearing a pair of denim Gap pants which I converted into shorts and a thrifted Ralph Lauren top. The sunglasses are Calvin Klein and the bag is by Paloma Picasso, gifted to me by my dear friend Kelly Bangs. I also took a closer shot of my nails, done by yours truly. I think I was subconsciously inspired by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 'Show Your Bones' album cover. I used Sally Hansen polish which btw is the most inexpensive nail polish that lasts as long as OPI.

Gangsta's Paradise

Look at what I found! These are a few out takes from the "Homegurl" photo shoot I did a few months ago with my sister. Despite the fact I look terribly emo it took a lot to not burst out laughing. Call me "La Sad Girl."

Vintage Inspired City Girl Outfit

Seeing all these pieces together makes me warm and fuzzy inside. I wish the weather wasn't so hot so I could wear my faux fur coat. Well, I did yesterday as a matter of fact when I went on a little adventure to Dolores Park in the Mission District. The weather wasn't too cold, but I couldn't resist! Now for my dream outfit number one (I'll be posting more)...it started with the dress and I build the complete look around the color red because I've been thinking I need to purchase a pair of red tights for the new season. I haven't worn them in that color ever since Christmas 1994, but these by Betsey Johnson are just perfect because they are sheer and they have little hearts on them.

I'm Obsessed

About four years ago I decided to stop eating meat. It wasn't because I am a hardcore animals rights advocate or anything like that, but because I never ate too much of it to begin with. Honestly, I decided to just stop for the shits and giggles. I was a little scared to tell my Mexican family because they love carne azada, pozole, and chicken enchiladas and when I did they weren't very happy about it. They thought that I was being brainwashed and they worried about my health. I explained to them that in case they hadn't noticed I wasn't a fan of meat. Boiled meat for example is super gross to me and if it had a bone I would probably not eat it. I also liked my meat super cooked, to the point of being burnt because I could not stand seeing the redness of it. Even as a child when my abuelito would take me to eat tacos I would order them with beans and no meat. At first it was a little difficult getting used to it, every family function that involved eating there was always plenty of chicken and steak and I started preparing my meals because I did not want my mom to go out of her way to make me something different from what she was already cooking for my family. The one thing though I simply cannot give up eating is seafood. Damn I love shrimp and fish! I am a huge salmon fan, that's probably my favorite fish to eat and I love grilled shrimp or cooked just about any way.

Here are some shots of two of my non-meat meals, bean tacos topped with cilantro, onions, and three types of salsa. This is one of the most common Mexican dishes and you can buy them at pretty much every Mexican restaurant or taco cart if you live here in the bay...

...and all my San Jose homies are quite familiar with this delicious food from heaven, Torta de Queso from a spot downtown called Mexico Bakery. This phatty torta consists of a huge bun stuffed with cheese, onions, tomatoes, avocado, chiles jalapenos, and mayo. This place makes the yummiest tortas, aside from my family that is.
